Inspired by maverick psychonaut and neuroscientist John C Lilly who suspended himself in 160 gallons of saline water in complete darkness to locate the origins of the brain’s energy, Bompas & Parr studio embarked on a series of exceptionally private experiences with a collective goal in mind. We submerged ourselves naked in the abyssal space of sensory deprivation floatation tanks. Each studio member disappeared into disembodied euphoria for an hour, with one simple task to do - think about food.

The result? The recipe ideas that make up this volume. Together they form a set of culinary hallucinations brought back from the void, made visible by the uncanny creativity of artificial intelligence. Each recipe emerged from an hour-long float, inspiring varieties of content and form. Some recipes are precise lists of ingredients and action, others are experimental poems. But every one of them reads like a dream vision pushing the gustatory to the most extreme reaches of the speculative.
