BACKGROUND ABOUT THE DEATH SALT CRYSTALS:
In January 2024, Bompas & Parr presented Cabinets of Death at The Last Tuesday Society—an immersive fusion of exhibition, cocktailarium, and conversation menus, inspired by and launching the new publication Cabarets of Death by Mel Gordon and Joanna Ebenstein, published by Strange Attractor Press. The exhibition and experience channeled the haunting essence of 19th-century Parisian cabaret restaurants in Montmartre, strategically launched on the 15th of January, following ‘Blue Monday’, the saddest day of the year.
January is known as an infamously difficult month for people: A mixture of hope for the future that is wrestled with regret, financial trickery, and the comedown from the festive season. To aid in this scenario, Bompas & Parr offered guests the opportunity to embrace rather than resist, inviting them to connect with their feelings of regret and grief by participating in ‘Cry January’. Through this curated ritual, our guests were encouraged to shed tears collectively and donate them to London’s Largest Tear Catcher. These harvested tears were then used to create our Death Salt Crystals.
